Colchester Ladies Beat Havering in Yetton Plate

CIBC ladies had a fixture against Havering in the Yetton Plate. There were two home and two away rinks. The CIBC ladies won on both home rinks, and away at Havering they drew one match and lost the other. The overall shot count favoured CIBC, 95-68. At home the girls were impressive winning 62-30, but away they went down 33-38.

Karen Leatherdale playing with Olive Hawkins, Joy Tingay and Polly Josh got off to a great start playing against Havering skip Jackie Golds, and team, Alison Marshall, Sally Farber and Sheila Endean. They led 7-1 after three ends, then 16-4 after seven. Then Havering got stuck in and pulled the score back and were only three shot behind after eleven ends, (17-14). After that Colchester pulled further ahead to win 30-20. They won mainly because three times they recorded five shots on an end, half their score. Havering won a fair number of ends but just not by big margins.

On the other home rink CIBC skip Liz Tunn had Tina Fisher, Jill Nicholson and Gill Costin in her team. Havering skipped by Jo Willis and playing with Maggie Thong, Julie Willis and Chris McCarthy got off to the better start and led 5-2 after four ends. However, they lost the next five ends and CIBC turned it around to led 12-5. Things did not go well for the visitors after that as they only won four of the next twelve ends and CIBC were able to win 32-10 taking six shots on the last end.

At Havering CIBC skip Loraine Daden and team Beverley Oakes, Francis Smith and Gail Barrett did well to earn a draw after a slow start. Playing for Havering skip Beryl Morris, and Rose Faust, Linda Davey and Cecille Harrison had a 4-0 lead after two ends lost it and were 4-5 down after five ends. Havering then regained the lead by winning the five ends leaving CIBC trailing 5-13 after ten ends. CIBC then won seven of the last eleven ends to earn a creditable draw, 19-19.

On the second away rink CIBC skip Pam Smith had Marion Bailey, Judith Tarr and Sharon Lunnon in her team. Havering skip M. Heath, and her team got off to a great start to lead 10-0 after four ends. The following twelve ends were all hard fought, each of which was won by a single shot. Havering still had the lead (14-8). The final five ends were pretty even, and CIBC lost the game 14-19.

Colchester Ladies Triumph in Masons

CIBC ladies played Ipswich BC in a Masons Cup fixture. There was one home and one away rink. CIBC won both rinks with an overall shot count o 37-21.

Pam Smith skipped CIBC on the away rink. In the team were Marion Bailey, Jan Howell and Sharon Lunnon. Julie Spice skipped the Ipswich team which included Anne Lyas and Elaine Wright. CIBC started the best winning eight of the first nine ends and led 13-2 as a result. The hosts did rally over the final seven ends, but CIBC won 16-8.

CIBC were skipped by Loraine Daden in the home leg, playing with Beverley Oakes, Francis Smith and Gail Barrett. They started well and were 11-4 up after six ends. Ipswich, skipped by Julie Witham and included Joy Mackie, Val Standring and Lucy Ratcliffe, rallied by winning the next two ends but then losing four in a row, giving CIBC a lead of 17-8 after twelve ends. CIBC went on to win 21-13.

Colchester Lose to Barking in Top Club Fixture

Colchester Indoor Bowlers were away to Barking Bowls Club at the weekend. The hosts fielded a strong team and won on four of the five rinks with a favourable shot count of 97-73.

On the rink that CIBC won, CIBC mixed pairs skip Elliot Mann was paired with Liz Tunn. The CIBC pair won the first five ends giving them a 9-0 lead. Unfortunately, they only won one of the next seven ends and trailed 10-13 after twelve. They picked up four shots on the next end to lead by one but lost the next end. With the scores tied going into the final end they emerged 15-14 winners.

Bradley Mann was the CIBC skip for the mixed triples match. Geoff King and Pam Smith were his teammates. They started well winning the first end but battled after that to trail 5-15 after eight. Their fortunes did not improve over the last ten ends with the host winning 12 of the 18 ends. With four ends still to play CIBC trailed 12-19 and still had a chance. However, Barking won all four ends to take the game 12-24.
Malcolm Stark skipped the CIBC mixed fours contingent. Also playing were Beverley Oakes, Pam Smith and Andy Smith. They got off to a slow start losing the first four ends to trail 0-11. They never actually led in the game but were only down by three shots after eleven ends (10-13), and by two shots after fourteen (12-14). Over the final four ends the hosts took three shots to two by CIBC giving the game to Barking 17-14.

In the two wood men’s singles Brian Smith played Barking’s D. Hughes. No card details are available, but Brian played well and held a 17-14 late into the game before D. Hughes hit a purple patch to win 21-18.

In the ladies two woods singles Eileen King, a late replacement for an unwell Sharon Lunnon, put up a spirited performance against Barking’s J. Preston. Eileen started well and was in the lead 6-1 after six ends. After eleven ends it was 7-7, and then 11-11 after sixteen. J. Preston held a one-shot lead after twenty ends but unfortunately Eileen was unable to repeat the form of the early ends and Barking won 21-14.

Colchester Bowlers Win Against Fierce Rivals

Colchester Indoor Bowls Club met Ipswich in the National top club knock out competition and managed to record a 10-6 win over the Suffolk club. The opposition flooded the rinks with current and former Internationals. CIBC were able to field Liz Tunn our own former International plus Dan Rodger and Brad Mann two young Essex County players. Another young County player Elliot Mann was not available for the fixture. The club is going through a rebuilding phase as Shaun Cook and Josh Jenner have left the club leaving a yawning gap in the men’s county league team.
On rink 3 Sharon Lunnon of CIBC took on Lucy Radcliffe in the Ladies two wood singles Sharon got off to a great start and led 5-0 after three ends and later 8-1 after seven ends. However, Lucy was not intimidated and came back to level the scores 9-9 after thirteen ends. Sharon won 6 of the next eight ends to hold a 17-12 lead after twenty one ends. Nearly over you might imagine, not really. Lucy won the next four ends and the scores were again tied at 17-17. Sharon took four shots over the next two ends to reach the magic number to win 21-17.

On rink 6 Liz Tunn and Dan Rodger were paired against Julie Burch and International and World Bowls Championship contestant Phillip Last. The match up was close for the first seven ends with the scores tied on 5-5.
Liz and Dan won the next nine ends to lead 24-5 and two ends later they ran out winners 24-7.
On rink 5 in the mixed pairs, CIBC’s Geoff King and Pam Smith were up against Bo Darek and U21 international Charlie Beeton. For a while it looked like it might have been a runaway win for the visitors
as after eight ends they led 2-8. Geoff and Pam won the next three ends and to hold a 9-8 lead after eleven ends. CIBC won four of the final seven ends and took the match 16-11.

On rink 2 the men’s two wood singles Len Oakes found himself up against former international and world indoor championship player John Rednall. Len got off to a reasonable start and the scores were tied 3-3 after four ends. After ten ends John was 3-11 up, and after seventeen ends the score was 5-19. John won the encounter 10-21 after twenty one ends.

The mixed fours were played on rink four. CIBC skip Graeme Brookes and team Beverley Oakes, Tina Fisher and Andy Smith lined up against Sarah Beeton, Stella Utteridge, Mark Euston and Ipswich skip Elliot Last. Six ends in CIBC trailed 2-8. However, after thirteen ends CIBC had managed to tie the scores 10-10, then went one up by wining the next end. Unfortunately, Ipswich won three of the final four ends and took the match 18-12.

A message from Jenny Johnson (The organiser of the Potters Trip)

Last week, a group of 85 people, mostly members of Colchester Indoor Bowls Club, along with 4 players from West Mersea and a few from Dovercourt and Ipswich, attended the Bowlers Tournament at Potters Hopton. Competing under the team name “Colchester Oysters,” we entered 18 teams of 4 bowlers, making us the largest group at the tournament.

A total of 83 teams participated from across the country, with each team playing four matches in a round-robin format. The top 16 teams then advanced to the knockout stage. Impressively, six of our teams made it to the final 16, and one team—Jon Tokley, Graeme Brookes, Geoff, and Eileen King—reached the semi-finals. Unfortunately, they were defeated in that round.

Nevertheless, our bowlers made the club proud. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us and contributed to such an enjoyable five-day event.

Best regards,

Jenny Johnson

Olympic Gold at Colchester Indoor Bowls Club.

British Olympic Gold Medallist James Cracknell came to Colchester Indoor

Bowls Club for a specially arranged Presidents Invite Match.

Four teams turned out for the special games to showcase the clubs great

facilities, members and offerings.

James Cracknell played Second position in the Presidents Team with John

Montgomery at lead, Dave Fisher at Third and Dan Roger as Skip. The

Opponents had Paul Hubert at Lead, David Linghorn-Baker at Second,

Graham Walkinshaw at Third and the Skip being Team Selector Andy Smith.

The Second arranged match was packed with even more talent consisting of

the Ladies Team who had our Nationals Legend Sharon Lunnon at lead, Club

legend Jan Howell at Second, current ladies club champion Gail Barrett at

Third position with Internationalist Liz Tunn as Skip.

The ladies Team played against a highly rated Men’s Team consisting of

Club Legend David Mann at Lead, Club Legend Dave Dignum at Second, Men’s

Finalist John Kavanah at Third and Club Finalist Darren Dellar as Skip.

The Four Teams battled it out for 2 hours in a 2 Sets of 7 Ends match

with a 1 end Tie Breaker to decide the winner.

Our visitors James Cracknell and David Linghorn-Baker played a massive

part after a quick coaching session on the day. David took no time to

find his feet as he played bowls as a youngster but James was closely

matching his efforts having tried the game briefly in Australia.

In the end it was Andy Smiths Team who won against President John

Montgomery’s Team and on the other Rink it was the Ladies Team who beat

the Men in a closely matched contest. Amazingly both games went down to

a single end tie breaker producing an exciting finish to both games.

It was a fantastic afternoon of Bowls at Colchester Indoor Bowls Club

and we can’t wait to see our Visitors back again.

Colchester Well Beaten In County Fixture

CIBC were well beaten by Essex County in their final County match of the season. The club are still second on the league table but have played all their games and are almost certain to slip down to third or even fourth when the other clubs complete their fixtures.

On the home rinks CIBC were well beaten. They lost on two of the three rinks scoring 41 shots to 62. On the away rinks the club also lost on two rinks with a close shot count – 48-49. Overall, the shot count was 89-111. The points result being 2-11.

On the first home rink CIBC skip Mark Hemstedt and his team Dean Richie, Paul Hubert and Robin Willis won their first end but then suffered 6 scoreless ends to trail 2-12 after seven. After 14 ends they trailed 7-19 and after better final third they lost 14-23.

CIBC skip Mitchell Springett, and his team Dave Dignum, Martin Hogg and Len Oakes boosted by 5 shots on the 5th end led 8-4 after seven ends. Both teams had lean times for the next seven ends with the hosts only scoring 2 shots, and the teams tied at 10-10. Another big end for the home team, a 4 put them in front for the remaining six ends and they ran out winning 17-14.

The third home rink saw skip Ian Harris and his team Tony Wilson, Robin Piggott and Gary McKay struggle, as they started with 5 scoreless ends to trail 2-9 after 7. Although CIBC won 7 of the final 14 ends, they only scored 8 shots to 16 by the visitors who won the game 25-10.

Away from home CIBC skip Andy Penfold playing with Peter Leatherdale, Brian Smith and Jamie Coleman will wonder how they lost. It was a close game up to the 14th end, 12-13. The next three ends were a horror show for the team as the hosts scored 10 shots to put the game out of their reach and they lost 14-26.

Skip Dave Harrington playing with Geoff King, Andy Smith and Darren Dellar managed to provide some good news. They led 7-3 after 7 ends despite being in the middle of a 4 end scoreless streak. After 14 ends they led 15-6 as the hosts battled with a 6 end scoreless streak. Essex County rallied in the final seven ends, but CIBC managed to hold them off to win 19-12.

The dreaded scoreless streak also dogged CIBC skip Martin Spence in the final away rink. Meaning, Martin and team John Kavanagh, Dave Hunt and Tony Dale trailed 2-6 after 7. The hosts then only managed to win on one of the next 7 ends, but they rallied to lead 12-7 after 14 ends. CIBC fought hard and after 19 ends the scores were tied 15-15. However, the hosts came back with 6 shots in the last two ends to win 21-15. Bummer, those 6 shots cost CIBC at least 3 match points on the final league table.

Essex Men Win National Inter County Trophy

Essex IBA men staged a dramatic comeback to beat archrivals Norfolk IBA and lift the Liberty Trophy. This is a Trophy that has eluded the Essex IBA for 50 years. Essex have been serial runners up, losing in four previous finals and in order to win this year they had to beat serial winners Norfolk who have won on six previous occasions. They also had to overcome the reality of being 20 shots down with just three ends to play (on six rinks) to end up winning 124-120.

Congratulations to five CIBC members who won National Championship Winners Medals. The CIBC players were Shaun Cook, brothers Bradley and Elliot Mann, Sam Roberts and Daniel Rodger.

Looking at the combined shot counts from 6 rinks Essex led 29-26 after 5×6 ends. However, things changed after 10×6 ends and Essex trailed 49-64. At the 15 end stage it was still close, 81-93 but after 18 ends Norfolk had a healthy looking lead 112-92. Unfazed, over the last three ends Essex calmly took 32 shots to just 8 by Norfolk to turn the final on its head. Well done guys.

Big win for Colchester bowlers in County League

Recently CIBC played Tye Green BC home and away in a County League fixture. CIBC won the fixture 12-1 by winning on 5 of the 6 rinks, winning the shot count at both venues and winning the overall shot count. At home the shot count was 79-38 and away the count was 76-56, making a total count of 155-94.

In most of the 6 games teams experienced long streaks of ends in which they failed to score. This enables the opposition opportunity to pile on the shots. On rink 1 at home CIBC skip Bradley Mann playing with John Kavanagh, Dave Hunt and Tony Dale did not have this problem at the start and led 22-6 after 15 ends. Sadly Tye Green did have a streak of 3 scoreless ends soon to be followed by another four. However, after the 15th end the CIBC team knocked off and lost the final 6 ends while TYE Green piled on 12 more shots. CIBC hung on to win 22-18.

On rink 2 Tye Green were scoreless for the first four ends soon followed by six scoreless ends which left them trailing 1-20 after 11 ends. CIBC skip Dave Harrington was fortunate to have club founder member Dave Dignum as lead to apply pressure from the first bowl, enabling Darren Dellar, Martin Spencer and indeed skip Dave Harrington to cash in and win 27-13.

On the third home rink CIBC skip Daniel Rodger and his team Geoff King, Matt Lace and Elliot Mann only lost on two rinks to lead 23-5 after 13 ends. Tye Green did manage to win four of the last eight ends but only by a single shot each time. CIBC won 30-7.

Away from home CIBC skip Mitchell Springett and his team John Montgomery, Marti Hogg, and Len Oakes led 10-0 as Tye Green failed to score in the first five ends. The scores were close after 14 ends with CIBC leading 15-12. However, over the final 7 ends the home team only managed to win one end and CIBC won the game 32-13.

On the second away rink it was CIBC’s time to suffer two, four scoreless streaks in the first 10 ends. This resulted in Andy Penfold playing with Brian Smith, Jamie Coleman and Ian Harris trailing 4-12. Tye Green won most of the final 11 ends and the game 25-10.

In the third away rink CIBC skip Mark Tokley and team Robin Piggott, Tony Wilson and Gary McKay found themselves in a close game and after the first 14 ends the scores were tied at 14-14. On the next end CIBC scored 7 followed by a 3 and it was game over. The final score was 34-18 to CIBC.

CIBC are in 2nd place as the County League goes into its final stages. Falcon are top, four points ahead of Colchester with one fixture each left to play. With 13 points at stake it is anyone’s title. Some teams have two games to play with a possible 26 point haul, which could upset the aspirations of the top two teams.

13th March 2024
COLCHESTER BOWLERS WIN IN ESSEX LEAGUE

Colchester Indoor Bowls Club went up against Havering Bowls Club, home and away, in a recent match. Despite CIBC not fielding a number of their star players they had a good victory. CIBC won on all three home rinks racking up 74 shots to 43 by Havering. At Havering the home team won on two rinks, but CIBC managed to win the shot count 71-60. Which meant CIBC won the overall shot count 145-103 giving them an 11-2 victory.

At home CIBC skip Mark Tokley playing with Brian Smith, T. Wilson and Graham Brookes started well but after 7 ends the scores were level at 5-5. Seven ends later they were well in control leading 18-9. Both teams scored well over the last 7 ends for CIBC to win 25-15.

On another home rink CIBC skip Josh Jenner and team Nigel Jenner, M. Hogg and Darren Dellar had a big win, 30-12. After five ends CIBC had a narrow 5-4 lead. By the 14th end the lead was 21-8. Over the final 7 ends CIBC’s continued to dominate.

On the final home rink skip Mitchell Springett playing with Dave Dignum, Gary McKay and Len Oakes went behind in the early part of the match as Havering led 9-5 after seven ends. After 14 ends Havering still had the lead, 14-12. However, after the 12th end CIBC started a sequence of 8 winning ends to lead 19-14 after 19 ends. Havering won the final two ends, but CIBC won the game 19-16.

Away at Havering, CIBC skip Dave Harrington playing with Robin Piggott, Andy Smith and Ian Harris Got off to a slow start and were behind 3-11 after 7 ends. After 14 ends they were still well behind, 9-17. They had a minor rally over the next 3 ends (13-17) but then lost the final 4 ends and the game 13-23.

CIBC skip Dan Rodger, Geoff King, Matt Lace and Dave Hunt also had a tough day. After 7 ends they trailed 5-9. After 14 ends score was 17-10 in favour of Havering who went on to win 23-15.

CIBC skip Andrew Penfold and his team John Simpson, John Kavanagh and Jamie Coleman ensured CIBC won the away shot count with an emphatic 43-14 win. They were 18-6 up after 7 ends, then 29-12 after 14 ends.

Pam Smith was the skip on the home rink, along with Sharon Lunnon, Marion Bailey and Jan Howell. The away skip C. Riley and her team drew first blood by winning the first end, however, they were trailing 3-7 after 6 ends as the home side quickly warmed up.

The home side were playing well and led 17-5 after 12 ends. A 5 for the visitors on the 14th end gave them some hope of an upset. However, the home girls won all the remaining four ends to win 27-10.

Liz Tunn led the CIBC team on the away rink. Tina Fisher, Gill Cousins and Shirley Miller made up her team. The first 6 ends were tight with CIBC leading 4-3. Big Win For Colchester Men In Essex County League.

Recently CIBC men met Turpins B C in a home and away Essex County League fixture. Each of the teams made themselves at home in the away fixtures. On the Colchester rinks Turpins won on 2 of the 3 games with an overall shot count of 58-54. While away from home, at Turpins the Colchester men won on 3 rinks with a shot count of 76-46. They picked up the pace and after 12 ends they were only one shot behind (9-10). The next seven ends, however, proved a nightmare as they only picked up one shot and trailed 10-21 after 19 ends. They were behind after seven ends, 6-9. A better mid game saw them lead 14-13 after 14 ends. The final seven ends were never in doubt as CIBC won 5 of the ends to ensure a victory.

On another away rink Dan Rodger skippered John Kavangh, Andy Smith, and Terry Peck. They won 26-17 and were only ever behind on the scoreboard, briefly, early in the game, 4-5 after seven ends.
