Our Eco Work

The Club’s Eco Work

Our Commitment to the Environment

For many years we have worked to reduce the Club’s carbon footprint and do all we can for the environment.

In 2017/18 we made major changes to cut our energy use:

  • LED lighting installed throughout the Club, which gives first-class lighting at much lower cost.
  • An air source heat pump (ASHP) replaced our old gas heating and now provides both heating and cooling.
  • An MVHR (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery) system now serves every area of the Club. It changes all the air four times an hour and recovers most of the heat generated inside the building.

We have since installed the maximum number of solar panels our roof allows. This has substantially reduced the power we take from the grid. Through the Government’s Feed-in Tariff, the Club is also paid for the electricity the panels generate and for the surplus we export.

Together, these improvements give a healthier, more comfortable environment throughout the Club and much lower utility bills. We reinvest those savings in refurbishing and modernising the Club, so that we remain one of the best indoor bowls clubs in the county.

We were also proud to receive the runner-up Special Recognition Award from LoCASE (Low Carbon Across the South East). LoCASE provided our grant funding through the European Union’s Regional Development Fund. The award is on display in our trophy cabinet.
