31st December
CLUB COMPETITIONS
Please note that Round 2 of the Men’s Singles deadline has been extended to 09/01/2022
COVID – 19 OMICRON VARIANT
1) As the spread of the Omicron virus is on the increase it is noticeable that a number of league games are being cancelled as teams are finding themselves short of a player etc. Team Leaders should contact their opponents Team Leader to discuss the situation and if they decide to cancel their game they should find an alternative date on which to play by booking a rink through the BowlR rink system. NB – Spaces are available.
2) All Members should ensure that they follow the Club Rules regarding the wearing of masks throughout the Club unless sat down eating or drinking or actually bowling. Walking around the Club holding a drink is not allowed. You must be seated.
22nd December
Robbie Robinson Trophy
It is regrettable that, due to a number of issues beyond our control, there will be no Restaurant Service at the Club. However, and due to this competition being a one day only from start to finish, we have decided to make available the sale of sausage rolls and pork pies along with our normal drinks , chocolate and crisps. These will be sold at the marked price that we paid from the Supermarket ie no profit but equally at no loss to the Club.
These are unusual and difficult times and this is a one off occasion due to the short notice and unavailability of staff. We ask that you appreciate the difficulties and understand that it is not always possible to do the impossible, but we do try.
21st December
The following Competitions have had their play-by-dates extended for early rounds.
Men’s Pairs – Open Two-Wood Singles – Mixed Pairs
Round 1 : 26th December
Round 2 : 23rd January
Round 3 : 27th February
16th December
Members please note that there is a growing concern amongst some Members regarding the spread of the Covid-19 Variant, Omicron.
Please be assured that the Club has, and continues daily, to ensure that we abide by the Government decrees and mandates including, but not limited to, the Health & Safety Executive and EIBA rulings on what is expected of Clubs afilliated to the English Indoor Bowls Association. We expect the same from all our Members when attending the Club by ensuring that the rules are followed and masks and social distancing is maintained in accordance with those rules.
It is, therefore, a matter for Members to make their own decisions as to whether or not to attend the Club and they are advised to take a Lateral Flow Test, thereby satisfying themselves that they are testing negative. If it tests positive, then of course, stay at home and advise people that you have been in contact with accordingly. With the knowledge of a negative test they can of course attend the Club as usual.
We expect all our Members to take that responsibility as a norm, thereby making the best positive efforts to keep our Club as free as possible from this virulent strain of Covid-19. If this means that a team is unable to play due to a lack of team members, then the game may be postponed and played at a later date; that date to be decided by the League Secretary once more information becomes available.

All Clubs Please Note – EIBA Directive
With the Government announcing yesterday that the Country will be moving to ‘Plan B’ of their Covid 19 Guidance Indoor Bowls Clubs will now need to implement the following protocols.
From Friday 10th December 2021 face coverings will be legally required to be worn by your Members, visitors and staff, who have face to face contact with the public, when they enter and move around the venue.
The face covering can be removed when they are on the green playing and when having a drink and or a meal.
In addition, if any of your Members / Staff live with or have been in contact with someone who has been identified as a suspected or confirmed case of the Omicron Variant they must self isolate for 10 days, even if they have been double or triple vaccinated.

5th December
Christmas Cards – Please note that our customary method of Xmas Card distribution ie the A to Z boxes within the Club will not be used this year due to the transmittable problems associated with Covid-19 and it’s current Omicron variant.
1st December
With the outbreak of the Omicron Variant (Covid-19) and the Governments reaction to keeping us safe, by making it mandatory for the nation to resume the wearing of masks on public transport, in shops, hairdressers etc. This does not affect the Colchester Indoor Bowls Club directly but the latest advice from the EIBA has recommended that the wearing of masks throughout Indoor Bowls Clubs should resume. This recommendation excludes the wearing of masks when on the rinks and if seated with food or drinks. The recommendation will be adopted by CIBC with affect from Monday 6th December and will remain in place until we are advised otherwise. In addition we ask that all Members wear masks when moving about within the Club, use hand sanitation regularly and check into the track and trace system on first entering the Club.

IMPORTANT NOTICE PLEASE READ
LEAGUE MATCHES
SCORING ON IPADS/BOWLR SYSTEM
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BOTH TEAMS TO ENSURE THAT THE SCORE THAT HAS BEEN RECORDED ON THE MATCH SCORE CARD ALONG WITH THE TEAM MEMBERS NAMES AND THEIR PLAYING POSITION IS RECORDED ON THE IPADS LOCATED BEHIND RINKS 1 & 2.
INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DO THIS ARE WITH THE IPADS AND ALSO THERE IS A COPY ON EACH TABLE BEHIND EACH RINK.
IT IS A VERY SIMPLE PROCESS. SOMEONE FROM EACH TEAM MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR UPDATING THE IPADS AT THE END OF THE MATCH.
1. ONE TEAM MEMBER (NOT A SUB), AND IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH OF THE TEAMS GOES FIRST, MUST LOG IN TO THE IPAD WITH THEIR MEMBERSHIP ID No. (SEE THE STEWARD IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THIS)
2. YOU WILL SEE THAT DAYS MATCH AND SHOULD SELECT IT.
3. THE RELEVANT MATCH SCREEN WILL APPEAR AND YOU MUST ENTER THE TEAMS AND THEIR PLAYING POSITION BOWLED E.G. LEAD, 2 AND SKIP FOR TRIPS, AND ENTER THE SCORE AND PRESS SAVE. THIS RETURNS THE IPAD TO THE LOGIN SCREEN
4. A MEMBER OF THE OTER TEAM THEN ENTERS THEIR MEMBERSHIP ID AND REPEATS THE PROCESS TO SELECT THE MATCH. THEY HAVE THE OPTION TO REVIEW THE SCORES ETC. AND IF IN AGREEMENT CONFIRM THE RESULT AND SAVE IT AND LOG OUT. IF THE SCORE IS INCORRECT SELECT CHALLENGE.
5. END OF PROCESS.
FAILURE TO DO THIS WILL NOT ALLOW THE SYSTEM TO AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE THE LEAGUE TABLES AND YOU AND YOUR SKIPS WILL CONTINUALLY COMPLAIN THAT THE SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING.
FIRST FAILURE TO INPUT YOUR TEAMS SCORE WILL RESULT IN A WARNING. A SECOND FAILURE WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF A POINT FROM YOUR LEAGUE SCORE.
6th October

16th July
As of Monday 19th July, we are reverting to the full 6 rinks being available in the usual 2-hour continuous slots with 1 hour at lunchtime. Please refer to the BOWLr booking system.
In line with Government and EIBA guidelines Social Distancing and mask wearing are no longer mandatory requirements, we strongly advise that all of our members and guests respect the space of others and where possible maintain social distancing for the continued safety of all around them and avoid close contact unless wearing a mask.
We continue to still have in place:
• Social distancing floor stickers and signage.
• Hand sanitiser stations, which you are encouraged to use before entry to facilities and during your visit.
• Screens at reception/till points.
• Enhanced cleaning regime.
• NHS QR code posters for you to record your visit on the Covid19 app or use manual sign in book.
To assist the Stewards with the sanitisation process after each session, we are asking the teams leaving the rink to please use the wipes provided to clean the mats and jacks ready for the following session. It should only take a few minutes of your time and is a small price to pay to maintain the excellent bio security we have within the club.
22nd June
Summer Leagues.
Fixture lists are now available on the bar and all team leaders have been informed, so be prepared for the first games next week, if selected.
A list of Wednesday morning team members will be on the notice board tomorrow morning and team leaders will have an envelope in their pigeonholes with details of their individual teams. We have had to limit the number of team to 8, and with the number of applicants, teams will consist of 7 or 8 members each. With 14 games of triples to play most members should get 5 or 6 games before the end of September.
18th June
Following the Government’s decision to delay stage 4 of the Road Map out of the Covid restrictions, we have no option but to continue with the current playing times and conditions as set out under Stage 3 operational from 17th May. Hopefully full access will be granted from 19th July, or perhaps sooner.
In the meantime the summer evening leagues on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and the Wednesday morning league, will commence from the week commencing 28th June. Team leaders will shortly receive the fixture list and for the Wednesday morning league the teams will soon be posted on the noticeboard, so keep an eye out. Team leaders should soon be contacting you to confirm when you are playing.
If you have already booked roll ups for a Wednesday morning from 30th June then please accept our apologies as your booking will be cancelled to accommodate the league games.
Points will not commence until all restrictions have been lifted.
Although it appears that most members currently playing are wearing proper dress code it is confirmed that from Monday 21st June casual dress will no longer be accepted.
Further apologies for the short notice of the changes but we trust you appreciate these decisions are mainly beyond our control.

Returning to Bowls – 17th May 2021
At the time of writing the new floor is well under way and on time for opening as scheduled. Let’s hope the Government are not given any reason to delay the lockdown easing date.
Here are the proposed new opening times and rules for the period 17th May to 20th June only.
1. The ‘rule of 6’ will apply, maximum triples on 4 rinks. Social distancing to apply.
2. 5 x 2 hour sessions per day, Monday to Friday, commencing at 9am, 11.30am, 2pm, 4.30pm and 7pm, subject to bookings. The Steward reserves the right to close the club if there are no bookings 30 minutes before the session start time.
3. Preference is for pre-booking online although walk in members will be allowed on the day and fitted in on a rink as per usual roll-up procedures. Please note all members should be named on the booking, not just Fred + 5 for example.
4. Masks must still be worn throughout the club, except when on the rink. The one way system will still be in place and lockers can now be used. Casual dress optional.
5. The bar will be open for table service only and the shop will be open by arrangement with the Steward on duty.
6. The restaurant will open some lunchtimes, see their notice at the Club to confirm timings.
We are at present collating more information to try and establish the more usual activities from 21st June, including Summer Evening Leagues, Points and the Wednesday Red and Blue League.

My apologies to anyone already booked in from 12th April and trust you understand it was more convenient and economic to do this now rather than wait until we were fully open sometime in the future.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dave Adams on Tuesday 16th March 2021. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Pam and family. Dave was also a member of Bocking Alliance Bowls Club and passed away after a short illness.
Opening
The Development Committee propose, in keeping with the Government Roadmap and EIBA guidelines, that we open from 12th April as follows:
2 sessions, 9-11 and 11.30-1.30, on 3 mornings per week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for singles (same household only) or individuals. All 6 rinks available, £2.50 per player per session. No food or drinks available in bar etc. Wearing of masks and social distancing to continue, so no use of changing rooms or lockers, casual dress acceptable. Pre-booking through BOWLr system only until bar is open and staffed. If there is sufficient demand then we will consider extending the number of sessions/days.
If all goes well then from 17th May we will revert to the previous arrangements as in August 2020 regarding ‘rule of 6’. Maximum triples on each rink, 4 rinks and number of sessions to be confirmed. Food and drink available with table service only. Wearing of masks and social distancing to continue.
Finally we hope to be fully open from 21st June with no restrictions. We have in mind various options for a shortened summer league, points etc but cannot make any decisions until the Government confirm the official lifting of restrictions and you will appreciate that all of the dates above are subject to change. We will keep you informed.
10th March 2021
The Development Committee are currently discussing provisional opening times to start bowling again. Further details will be posted soon.
28th February 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Cyril Skilton on Friday 26th February 2021 and our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Molly and his extended family.
Both Cyril and Molly are Founder members of the Club and much loved by many of our Members.
Further details will be promulgated when known.
21st February 2021
It has been a while since there has been anything upbeat to post here, so it is nice to have something to headline, namely, yesterday’s Government announcement regarding the latest Lockdown Roadmap.
Whilst the dates released are, in the main, ‘no earlier than’ they will, of course, be continuously under review and subject to change.
Starting next week, all the factors controlling our operations will also be reviewed by the Club Committee, as will any guidance and/or instructions issued by the EIBA on resumption dates.
Looking at the target dates as they stand today and on the proviso that they can be met, it is clear that the Club will be open on or before the start of the 2021/2022 season.
Ashley
12th Febuary 2021
Ashley has been discharged from hospital and is now at home, still very tired and sore. He thanks all those who have sent their kind messages and hopes to be back to normal soon.
Steve
9th Febuary 2021
As many members have enquired about Ashley’s condition suffice to say he is doing ok but still battered and bruised. Apparently looking better due to a haircut and a shower. What our nurses have to put up with! Seriously though he is in the best place and taking the first steps to recovery, however slowly.
Mary and James would like to thank everyone who has sent cards to Ashley, but as we are not able to visit, these are being scanned and sent to him in picture format as we are sure it will boost his morale. We feel sure he will thank you all himself once he is able.

An update on Ashley’s condition. He is now out of CCU and back on the ward and is off oxygen and has had all tubes removed so he can eat, drink and speak more easily.
Apparently starting to be a bit bossy with family and staff, so more like the Ashley we know! Hopefully on the mend and I will let you know if there are any material changes in his condition.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Sibley who passed away on 31 January 2021. Our deepest sympathies go out to his daughter Karen and son Trevor. John who was also a member of Silver End Bowls Club enjoyed his roll ups and played in our Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon league games. John was also well known for his darts prowess in the seventies. He will be sadly missed by all.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Just a short note to let you know, if you haven’t already heard, that Ashley was involved in an accident on Wednesday whereby he was hit by a car whilst he was walking his dogs.
He was immediately taken to A&E with several cracked ribs, a fractured skull and severe cuts, bruises etc. As you can imagine he was apparently hit at some speed although to the driver’s credit he did stay with Ashley and called the ambulance. I have no knowledge of the exact circumstances leading to the accident but suffice to say that the Police did detain the driver overnight.
I have been in regular contact with Mary and the latest advice is that he is still in CCU with oxygen helping his breathing and of course on medication for pain relief. Needless to say, he isn’t looking his best!
Mary has asked that you refrain from calling her at present, I’m sure you will agree that even with the best intentions she doesn’t want to keep repeating herself to well wishers. I’m always in contact with her and will pass on any updates as and when.

It has come as no surprise to the majority of us that the latest directives from the Government are “stay home, protect the NHS and save lives”. There are more, but those will suffice for the purposes of this website.
We are sure that our Members are following the rules and that we are all eager to return to Bowls. With the introduction of the Vaccines we would like to think that it will not be too far away from our return to the Club but realistically it will not be before the middle to the end of February now. Hang in there everyone, spring is just round the corner.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ian Steel who passed away last night 31/12/20 after his long illness. Our heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to his family, especially his wife Lesley, daughters Hannah and Emma and his son Zak. Ian had been unwell for a considerable time and loved his bowling. He was a Member of a number of teams in the various leagues and he will be sadly missed by his team mates and many others who knew him. Ian joined us in October 2011 and when he had to stop bowling due to ill-health he would still come along to support his team mates and to swap anecdotes with other ex-servicemen here at the Club. R.I.P. Ian
